Virginia Senate Bill 555 has changed the minimum learner’s permit holding and driver’s education requirements for 18-year-olds. Prior to these changes, 18-year-olds had a minimum nine-month holding period for a learner’s permit, and they were required to successfully complete an approved driver’s education program. Now, applicants age 18 and older are not required to present proof of driver’s education.
However, the safety and education of our teens are of the utmost importance to us at Aim High. In response to Senate Bill 555, we still want to offer 18-year-olds an opportunity to work with an instructor. Our Licensure Preparation Course is a private lesson package that is exclusively for 18-year-olds holding a learner’s permit. This class will allow the student to work one on one with a professional, DMV licensed instructor, and be evaluated on their level of preparedness prior to taking the DMV driving test.
This course will consist of four, one-hour long sessions, and cover the same techniques and skills that we evaluate in our Behind the Wheel Course. Our instructors will go over the following procedures: highway driving, entering and exiting the highway, parking techniques, intersection right of ways, and time on some of our nearby back roads.
As parents ourselves, we fully understand the importance of preparing teenagers for the serious task of driving — 18-year-olds should not be excluded! Driving for the majority of teens is their first real taste of freedom. This Licensure Preparation Course will provide the teen and parents with a peace of mind before sending them out into the world of driving by themselves.
Each class requires four, one-hour lessons. Please bring the following to the first day of class:
- A valid Virginia driver’s license or learner’s permit, which is required for this class.
- The following forms, which you can download here:
- A notebook and pen or pencil for taking notes.
- Payment ($160) in the form of cash, credit card, check or money order.
